Ryuichi Sugiyama was born in Shizuoka, Japan, where he developed a passion for football from a young age. After completing his education at Meiji University, he embarked on a professional career in football that would see him become one of Japan's most celebrated players.
Career
Sugiyama began his professional journey in 1966 when he joined the Urawa Red Diamonds, a club in the Japan Soccer League. Over the next seven years, he made a significant impact, helping the team secure championships in 1969 and 1973, as well as winning the Emperor's Cup in 1971 and 1973. His remarkable consistency on the field was highlighted by his selection to the Best Eleven for every season he played, and he was honored as the Japanese Footballer of the Year three times (1964, 1969, and 1973). After retiring in 1973, Sugiyama transitioned into coaching, taking the helm at Yamaha Motors Football Club from 1974 to 1987, where he became the longest-serving manager in the club's history.
Sugiyama also had a distinguished international career, debuting for the Japan national team in 1961. He represented Japan in the 1964 and 1968 Summer Olympics, scoring two goals in the former and assisting five in the latter, contributing to Japan's bronze medal victory. Sugiyama was born in Shizuoka. After graduating from Meiji University, he joined Japan Soccer League club Mitsubishi Motors in 1966. The club won the champion in 1969 and 1973. In 2018, this team was selected Japan Football Hall of Fame. He also played at 1962, 1966 and 1970 Asian Games. At 1972 Summer Olympics qualification in 1971, Japan's failure to qualify for 1972 Summer Olympics. This qualification was his last game for Japan. He played 56 games and scored 15 goals for Japan until 1971.
After retirement, Sugiyama became a manager for Yamaha Motors in 1974. He led the club to the Japan Soccer League Division 1. He is their longest-serving manager, having led the club from 1974 to 1987. In 2005, Sugiyama was selected Japan Football Hall of Fame.
