Shigetatsu Matsunaga

Early Life and Education

Shigetatsu Matsunaga is a former Japanese football player and current goalkeeper coach, known for his significant contributions to Japanese football. He was educated at Hamana High School and Aichi Gakuin University, where he honed his skills as a goalkeeper before embarking on a professional career.

Club Career

Matsunaga began his professional journey in 1985 with Nissan Motors, which later became known as Yokohama F. Marinos. During his time with the club, he achieved remarkable success, winning the Emperor's Cup in 1985 and contributing to the team's dominance in the late 1980s and early 1990s, including victories in the Japan Soccer League, JSL Cup, and the Asian Cup Winners' Cup. As the J1 League was established in 1993, he continued to play for Yokohama Marinos until he lost his starting position to the younger Yoshikatsu Kawaguchi. This led him to play for several other clubs, including Sagan Tosu and Vegalta Sendai, before retiring in 2000 after a stint with Kyoto Purple Sanga.

National Team Career

Matsunaga was a key player for the Japan national team, earning 40 caps between 1988 and 1995. He was instrumental in Japan's victory at the 1992 Asian Cup, although his tournament was marred by a red card in the semi-final. He also faced heartbreak during the 1994 World Cup qualification, where a late equalizer from Iraq dashed Japan's hopes of reaching the finals, a match now remembered as the Agony of Doha.

Coaching Career and Legacy

After retiring from professional play, Matsunaga transitioned into coaching, serving as a goalkeeping coach for Kyoto Purple Sanga from 2001 to 2006. He currently holds the position of goalkeeper coach for Yokohama F. Marinos. His contributions to the sport have been recognized with honors such as the J.League Best XI in 1993 and the J.League Meritoriousness Player Award in 2000, solidifying his legacy in Japanese football.
