Tani began his professional journey in football when he joined Hitachi, which later became known as Kashiwa Reysol, in 1991. During his time with the club, he made significant contributions to the team's success, helping them secure second place in the Japan Football League in both 1992 and 1994. His tenure at Kashiwa Reysol lasted until the end of the 1995 season, after which the club was promoted to the J1 League.

In addition to his club career, Tani also represented the Japan men's national football team. He made his debut on July 27, 1990, in a match against South Korea, marking the beginning of his international career.
