Spezia Calcio

Formation

Spezia Calcio, an Italian professional football club, was founded in 1906 by Swiss banker Hermann Hurny in La Spezia, Liguria. Hurny, who had played for the reserves of Crystal Palace during his studies in London, brought back a light blue and white kit, allegedly a second-hand Crystal Palace uniform, which became the club's first colors. The club initially competed in local leagues and quickly made a name for itself.

Early Success

In 1926, Spezia won the Seconda Divisione, earning promotion to the Prima Divisione, which was then the second-highest level of Italian football. By 1929, they had won the Prima Divisione, but due to league restructuring, they remained in Serie B. The club changed its name to AC Spezia for the 1929-30 season, marking the beginning of its long-standing presence in Italian football.

Challenges and Resilience

The club faced challenges during World War II, leading to a temporary merger with the local firefighters to maintain a squad. Under the name 42° Corpo dei Vigili del Fuoco della Spezia, they competed in regional rounds and even won their group, showcasing their resilience during tough times. After the war, Spezia continued to navigate the ups and downs of Italian football, including relegations and promotions across various leagues, including Serie A, Serie B, and Serie C.
