Career

Laybutt's professional career spanned from 1995 to 2008, during which he played for various clubs both in Australia and internationally. His career highlights include playing for the Australia men's national soccer team from 2000 to 2004, where he earned fifteen caps and participated in the 2000 Olympics in Sydney as part of the under-23 team. He also had spells in Japan, the Netherlands, Norway, and Belgium, including time with clubs like Feyenoord Rotterdam and KAA Gent. Laybutt's career was marred by injuries, including an achilles tendon rupture in 2008 that ultimately led to his retirement from professional football.

Personal Life

After retiring, Laybutt came out as gay in 2021 and worked in the rehab unit at St Vincent's Hospital in Sydney, where he made a significant impact by donating a kidney to a patient named Ian Pavey. Tragically, Laybutt was reported missing in January 2024, and his body was discovered shortly after, with authorities determining the cause of death as self-inflicted. His passing at the age of 46 shocked the football community and highlighted the importance of mental health awareness.
