Early Life
Tadao Onishi was born on April 18, 1943, in Kyoto, Japan. He pursued his education at Kyoto University of Education, which laid the foundation for his future career in football.
Career
Onishi began his professional football journey in 1967 when he joined Mitsubishi Motors, now known as Urawa Red Diamonds. During his time with the club, he made a significant impact, helping the team secure the league championship in both 1969 and 1973, as well as winning the Emperor's Cup in 1971 and 1973. As a defender, he played a total of 83 league games before retiring in 1974.
In addition to his club success, Onishi was also a member of the Japan men's national football team. He made his debut on October 10, 1969, during the qualification for the 1970 World Cup, showcasing his talent on an international stage.
Coaching Career and Legacy
After retiring from playing, Onishi transitioned into coaching, taking the helm at Toshiba in 1981 and managing the team until the 1985-86 season. His passion for football continued as he later became the general manager of Thespa Kusatsu in 2002, and he also served as the club's president starting in November 2005. Sadly, Tadao Onishi passed away from lung cancer on June 29, 2006, in Yokohama, leaving behind a legacy as a dedicated player and manager in Japanese football.
