Биография
Formation and Early Years
Union Sportive de la Médina d'Alger, commonly known as USM Alger or USMA, was founded in 1937 by Omar Aichoun and Mustapha Kaoui, who aimed to create a sports association exclusively for Muslims during the French colonial rule in Algeria. The club's establishment was part of a broader movement to foster Algerian nationalism, with early support from notable figures like Arezki Meddad and Ali Lahmar, who became the first president. The club's formation was not just about sports; it was a significant step in the cultural and political awakening of the Algerian people.
Achievements and Legacy
USM Alger has a rich history in Algerian football, having won the national championship eight times, with their first title secured in 1963. They are also the record holders for the Algerian Cup, with ten titles to their name. The club achieved a notable double in the 2002-03 season, winning both the national league and the Algerian Cup. In 2023, USM Alger marked a significant milestone by winning their first continental title, the CAF Confederation Cup, followed by the CAF Super Cup later that year. They continued their success by winning a second Confederation Cup title in 2026, solidifying their status as a powerhouse in African football.

The budding Algerian independence movement, spearheaded by groups such as the Algerian People's Party and later the FLN, wanted to bring the youth of Algeria together, and so sports clubs like the USMA functioned as a tool to develop a unique sense of Algerian nationalism. In 1935, the two men gained the support of Arezki Meddad, father of a future Algerian independence fighter Ourida Meddad, which gave them access to the backing of other Algerian nationalists. They selected Ali Lahmar, known as Ali Zaid, a future independence fighter in his own right, along with Sid Ahmed Kemmat to complete the first executive committee of USM Alger, with Ali Zaid serving as president. The honorary presidency was entrusted to Omar Aichoun and Arezki Meddad. In addition to their nationalist and sporting efforts, Omar Aichoun and Mustapha Kaoui were active members of the Nadi Ettaraki (Circle of Progress), an association established under the French 1901 Law on Associations which regulated Algerian affairs to keep colonial control. Its headquarters were located at 9 Place du Gouvernement in…
