Early Life and Personal Background

Valentin Kozmich Ivanov was born in 1934 and became a prominent figure in Soviet and Russian football, both as a player and a coach. He married Lidiya Ivanova, an Olympic champion in gymnastics in 1956 and 1960, and they had a son, also named Valentin, who became a retired international football referee. Ivanov's personal life was marked by his dedication to sports and family, but he faced challenges later in life, including a long struggle with Alzheimer's disease, which ultimately led to his passing on November 8, 2011, just shy of his 77th birthday.

Football Career

Ivanov's football career began at FC Torpedo Moscow, where he played from 1952 to 1966. He was known for his position as a forward and made significant contributions to the Soviet Union national team from 1955 to 1965. His remarkable skills on the field earned him recognition as the co-leading scorer at the 1962 World Cup and the top scorer at the 1960 European Nations' Cup. Throughout his career, he achieved numerous accolades, including the UEFA European Championship Golden Boot in 1960 and being named a Honoured Master of Sports of the USSR.
