Formation

Vancouver Whitecaps FC is a professional soccer club based in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, competing in Major League Soccer (MLS) as a member of the Western Conference. The club was officially founded on March 18, 2009, when an ownership group was granted the seventeenth franchise in MLS by commissioner Don Garber. The Whitecaps name has a rich history, first used in 1974 by a team in the North American Soccer League (NASL) that played until 1984 and won the Soccer Bowl '79 championship. The name was revived in 2001 for a second-division team that played until 2010.

Early Years in MLS

The Whitecaps began their inaugural MLS season in 2011, becoming the 17th team to join the league. The club quickly gained popularity, selling 5,000 season ticket deposits within 48 hours of their availability. To prepare for their first season, the Whitecaps recruited experienced executives, including Paul Barber as CEO and former D.C. United head coach Tom Soehn as Director of Operations. Teitur Thordarson, who had previously coached the USL and USSF Division 2 Whitecaps, was appointed as head coach for the inaugural MLS season.

Legacy

Since their formation, the Vancouver Whitecaps FC have established themselves as a significant presence in Canadian soccer, continuing the legacy of the original Whitecaps while building a new identity in Major League Soccer.
