Formation and Early Years
Viborg Fodsports Forening, commonly known as Viborg FF or VFF, was founded on April 1, 1896, in the city of Viborg, Central Jutland, Denmark. Initially, the club was a multi-sport organization, including activities such as cricket, gymnastics, and boxing, with football not being part of its original offerings. However, the club made its mark in football by winning the Mesterrækken in 1924, the highest football league on the Jutland peninsula at that time. By 1929, as other sports branched off into independent organizations, football became the sole focus of Viborg FF.
Progression Through the Leagues
Throughout the decades, Viborg FF competed in regional leagues until they reached the national divisions in 1959, qualifying for the 4th division. Erik Bundgaard, a notable player, made a significant impact during this period, holding the club record for most matches played until 2008. The club faced relegation in the early 1970s but returned to the national divisions in 1974. After a series of promotions, Viborg reached the Danish 1st Division in 1980, though they were relegated after just one season. It wasn't until 1989 that they returned to the 1st Division, and after investing in youth programs, they made their way back to the top level of Danish football in 1993.
Achievements and Legacy
Viborg FF has enjoyed several successes, including five championships in the Danish 1st Division during the seasons of Autumn 1991, 1997–98, 2012–13, 2014–15, and 2020–21. The club's most notable trophies include the Danish Cup, which they won in the 1999–2000 season, and the Danish Super Cup in 2000. As of the end of the 2025–26 season, these remain the club's only major honors, but Viborg FF continues to be a significant presence in Danish football, competing in the Danish Superliga, the highest league in the country.

For the following decades, Viborg FF competed in the regional Danish leagues before finally reaching the national divisions in 1959, when it qualified for the 4th division after several unsuccessful attempts. Erik Bundgaard was one player involved in the club's achievement, and his 421 matches played for the club were a record until 2008, when Jakob Glerup surpassed his mark. During the early 1970s, Viborg FF was relegated from the national divisions to the Danmarksserien, but returned to the national divisions in 1974. Since this time, the club has stayed within the national divisions of the Danish football pyramid. After a series of promotions, Viborg reached the Danish 1st Division in 1980, which was then the highest division in Danish football. After only one season, the club were relegated to the 2nd Division and would not return to the 1st Division until 1989.
