Early Life

Werner Kohlmeyer was born in Kaiserslautern, Germany, in 1924. He grew up to become a prominent footballer, known for his robust playing style and defensive skills.

Career

Kohlmeyer played as a full back, primarily for 1. FC Kaiserslautern from 1941 to 1957, where he became renowned for his remarkable saves on the goalline. His standout performances included crucial moments during the 1954 FIFA World Cup, particularly against Yugoslavia, where he made several key saves. In the World Cup Final, he notably stopped a shot from Zoltán Czibor. Kohlmeyer also contributed to his club's success, winning the German football championship in 1951 and 1953. He represented the Germany men's national team from 1951 to 1955, facing legendary players like Stanley Matthews in an international friendly at Wembley in 1954. Despite losing that duel, he maintained his composure and fairness on the field, qualities appreciated by his coach, Sepp Herberger.

After leaving Kaiserslautern, he played for FC 08 Homburg until 1959.

Personal Life and Legacy

Following his retirement, Kohlmeyer faced significant personal challenges, including a divorce and struggles with alcoholism and poverty. He lived on welfare for a time before finding work as a doorman for a newspaper publisher in Mainz. Tragically, he passed away at the age of 49 due to heart failure in Mainz-Mombach. Despite his struggles, Kohlmeyer's contributions to German football, including receiving the Silbernes Lorbeerblatt, remain a testament to his legacy as a dedicated athlete.
