Wolfsberger AC

Formation

Wolfsberger AC, a professional football club based in Wolfsberg, Carinthia, Austria, was founded in 1931 by a group of enthusiasts including Adolf Ptazcowsky, Karl Weber, Hermann Maierhofer, Franz Hafner, and Michael Schlacher. The club spent its early years in the lower tiers of the Austrian league system, gradually working its way up the ranks. In 1968, WAC achieved promotion to the Austrian Regional League, marking a significant milestone in its history.

Development and Challenges

For the next seventeen years, Wolfsberger AC established itself as a mid-table team in the Regional League, with a brief setback during the 1977–78 season when they were relegated. After dropping back to the third level at the end of the 1984–85 season, the club faced further challenges, experiencing relegation after two short stints in the second tier during the late 1980s and early 1990s. In 1994, WAC became a founding member of the reactivated Regional League, but struggled to maintain its competitive edge, leading to relegation in 2002.

Cooperation and Recent Success

In 2007, Wolfsberger AC entered a cooperative agreement with local rivals SK St. Andrä, allowing both clubs to share resources while remaining independent. This partnership helped stabilize the club's operations. WAC's fortunes began to change, culminating in their victory in the 2. Liga during the 2011–12 season, which marked their return to the top levels of Austrian football. The club continued to build on this success, winning the Austrian Cup in the 2024–25 season, further solidifying its place in Austrian football history.
