Haruyama's football career took off when he was selected to represent the Japan men's national football team in 1927. At just a student from Mito High School, he made his debut on August 27, 1927, during the Far Eastern Championship Games held in Shanghai, where he played against the Republic of China. This match marked a significant milestone as it was Japan's first victory in an International A Match. Haruyama continued to showcase his talent, participating in another match against the Philippines on August 29, 1927, contributing to Japan's growing reputation in international football. He also played in the 1930 Far Eastern Championship Games in Tokyo, where Japan emerged as champions. Over his national team career, Haruyama played a total of four games until 1930, leaving a lasting impact on Japanese football history.
