Yoshikazu Nagai

Early Life

Yoshikazu Nagai was born on April 16, 1952, in Saitama, Japan. He developed a passion for football early in life, which led him to pursue the sport professionally after graduating from high school.

Career

Nagai began his professional career in 1971 when he joined Furukawa Electric, later known as JEF United Chiba. Over his 17-year tenure with the club, he made a remarkable 272 appearances and scored 63 goals, setting a record for the most appearances in the Japan Soccer League Division 1. His contributions helped the team secure several titles, including the league championship in 1976 and 1985-86, as well as the Emperor's Cup in 1976 and multiple JSL Cups. In recognition of his outstanding performance, he was awarded the Japanese Footballer of the Year in 1976 and was selected for the Best Eleven five times.

Nagai also had a significant international career, debuting for the Japan national team at just 19 years old on August 13, 1971, against Iceland. He represented Japan in various competitions, including the 1974 and 1978 Asian Games, and was part of the squad for the 1980 Summer Olympics qualification. He concluded his international career with 69 caps and 9 goals.

Coaching Career

After retiring from playing in 1988, Nagai transitioned into coaching, starting with Furukawa Electric. He later managed the Japan U-20 national team and returned to JEF United Ichihara. His coaching journey continued with stints at several clubs, including Fukushima FC, Albirex Niigata, and Yokohama FC. In 2006, he took on a role with Urawa Reds Ladies. His contributions to football were recognized in 2012 when he was inducted into the Japan Football Hall of Fame.
