Formation

Millonarios Fútbol Club, commonly known as Millonarios, is a prominent Colombian professional football club based in Bogotá. The club was founded in 1937 by a group of students from the private Catholic school Colegio Mayor de San Bartolomé. Initially, the team aimed to compete against other local teams, and their first matches were held on the grounds of the "La Merced" estate. The founding members debated between naming the team "Unión Juventud" and "Unión Bogotana," ultimately settling on "Juventud Bogotana". The team quickly gained popularity, and within a year, they captured the attention of fans with their impressive performances.

Early Success and National Representation

The team's early success led to all players being called up to form Colombia's first-ever national team, making their debut at the Central American and Caribbean Games in Panama City, where they won a bronze medal. This achievement marked a significant milestone in the club's history, as it showcased the talent emerging from Bogotá. Ignacio "Nacho" Izquierdo, a key figure in the team's formation, played a crucial role in rallying the players and ensuring the team's continuity during challenging times.

Honours and Legacy

Millonarios has a rich history in Colombian football, competing in the Categoría Primera A, the top flight of Colombian football. The club has achieved notable success, including ten runner-up finishes in the league and two runner-up finishes in the Copa Colombia. Their legacy is further highlighted by their participation in various tournaments, including the Copa Merconorte, where they also finished as runners-up. Millonarios continues to be a significant force in Colombian football, with a dedicated fan base and a storied history that reflects the passion for the sport in the country.
