Early Life

Pedro Petrone Schiavone was born in 1905 in Uruguay, where he would grow to become one of the most celebrated footballers in the nation’s history. Known by the nickname "Artillero," meaning artilleryman or gunner, he earned this moniker due to his remarkable goalscoring ability. Petrone's journey in football began at a young age, and he quickly made a name for himself as a forward with exceptional speed and skill.

Career

Petrone's professional career took off when he joined Club Nacional de Football in 1924, where he played until 1931, winning two National Tournaments in 1924 and 1934. His talent soon caught the attention of European clubs, leading him to ACF Fiorentina from 1931 to 1933. During his time in Italy, he became the top goalscorer in Serie A for the 1931-32 season, scoring 37 goals in 44 matches. Notably, he was also recognized as the fastest player in the league, clocking a hundred meters in just 11 seconds.

Petrone's international career was equally impressive. He represented the Uruguay national team from 1923 to 1930, earning 29 official caps and scoring 24 goals. He was a key player in Uruguay's historic victories at the 1924 and 1928 Summer Olympics, becoming the youngest football gold medalist in Olympic history at just 19 years old. Additionally, he played a pivotal role in Uruguay's triumph at the inaugural FIFA World Cup in 1930.

Pedro Petrone's legacy is cemented not only through his impressive statistics—80 caps and 36 goals in total—but also through his contributions to Uruguay's footballing success. He remains one of the top goalscorers in the history of the national team, currently ranking seventh.
