Formation

Sportverein Darmstadt 1898 e.V., commonly known as Darmstadt 98, is a professional football club based in Darmstadt, Hesse, Germany. The club was originally founded on May 22, 1898, as FC Olympia Darmstadt. In 1919, it briefly changed its name to Rasen-Sportverein Olympia before merging with Darmstädter Sport Club 1905 on November 11 of the same year, adopting the name Sportverein Darmstadt 98. This merger was significant as it combined the efforts of several local clubs, including Viktoria 1900 Darmstadt and Germania 1903 Darmstadt, which had previously united to form SC in 1905.

Early History and Challenges

In its early years, Darmstadt 98 played in lower divisions, struggling to maintain a competitive presence. The club participated in the Westkreisliga from 1909 to 1913 and later in the Kreisliga Odenwald and Bezirksliga Main-Hessen during the late 1920s and early 1930s. It wasn't until 1941 that Darmstadt managed to join the Gauliga Hessen-Nassau, but their time in the upper league was short-lived due to relegation after just two seasons.

Bundesliga and Financial Struggles

Darmstadt 98 experienced a long tenure in the second division throughout the 1950s and again from the formation of the Bundesliga in 1963 into the 1970s. The club achieved a significant milestone in 1973 by winning the Regionalliga Süd championship, which allowed them to compete in the promotion rounds for the Bundesliga. They managed to secure two seasons in the Bundesliga during the late 1970s and early 1980s but faced financial difficulties that led to their eventual insolvency. Despite these challenges, Darmstadt 98 has remained a beloved club with a rich history in German football.
