Early Life

Yuzo Kurihara was born on September 18, 1983, in Yokohama, Japan. Growing up in a city known for its rich football culture, he developed a passion for the sport early on, which led him to join the youth team of Yokohama F. Marinos.

Career

Kurihara began his professional career with Yokohama F. Marinos in 2002, making his debut as a center back in 2003. Despite facing tough competition from established players like Naoki Matsuda and Yuji Nakazawa, he eventually secured a regular spot in the team’s defense by 2006. His versatility allowed him to adapt to different defensive formations, contributing significantly to the team's success. In 2013, he helped Yokohama F. Marinos achieve second place in the J1 League and win the Emperor's Cup. However, his playing time diminished from 2015, leading to his retirement at the end of the 2019 season.

Kurihara also had a notable international career, representing Japan at various levels. He was selected for the Japan U-20 national team for the 2003 World Youth Championship, where he played in two matches. He made his senior debut for the Japan men's national team in 2006 against Trinidad and Tobago. Over the years, he played under several coaches, participating in key tournaments such as the 2013 Confederations Cup and the East Asian Cup, where Japan emerged as champions. In total, he earned 20 caps and scored three goals for his country before retiring from international football in 2013.
