Formation

Aarhus Gymnastikforening (AGF) was founded in 1880 in Aarhus, Denmark, making it one of the oldest sports clubs in the country. Initially, the club focused on gymnastics and fencing, but it is primarily recognized for its football department, which was established in 1902. AGF played its first football match against Aarhus Idrætsklub Olympia in November 1902, marking the beginning of its football journey with a 5–2 loss.

Early Success and Development

In the years following its formation, AGF quickly made a name for itself in local football, winning the Jutland Football Championship seven times and reaching the finals of the Danish Football Championship three times before joining the newly founded Denmark Tournament in 1927. The club's first dedicated clubhouse was established in 1911, and by 1920, AGF began playing its home matches at the newly built Aarhus Stadium, a venue that has hosted the team ever since.

Golden Era

AGF experienced a golden era in the 1950s and 1960s, winning four Danish Football Championships and five Danish Cups during a 12-season stretch after returning to the top division in 1954. The club also made its mark on the European stage, participating in the inaugural European Cup and reaching the quarter-finals in 1961. Despite facing relegation in the late 1960s, AGF returned to the top division in 1976, beginning a remarkable 30-year tenure in the first division.

Recent Achievements

In recent years, AGF has continued to build on its legacy, winning the Danish Football Championship six times, with their most recent title in the 2025–26 season. The club has also claimed the Atlantic Cup twice, in 2018 and 2020, showcasing its ongoing competitiveness in both national and international football.
